Kernels in the Slicemanager
Until now, if you needed a different kernel for your Slice, you had to enter a ticket. Although the process was quick and relatively painless, we wanted to make things even easier.
We are happy to say that you can now select which kernel you would like for your Slice right from within the Slicemanager. This means there will be no delay in changing the kernel and you can swap them around as you see fit!
We tweaked the Slicemanager display to make things a little easier. Let's see what the Slice information page looks like:

Kernel Selection:
To change the kernel, click the 'kernel' link and then select your preferred version. As noted in the Slicemanager, this will immediately reboot your Slice into the new kernel:

That's it, done.
As always, do come into our chatroom if you have any questions. See you there!

Will this make it’s way into cloud hosts as well?

You guys just ruined my 292-day uptime. ;-)
If I have to open a ticket to get it changed, well, eh, I’ll get to it eventually; you know how those support desks can be. grin
But if I can do it myself, well then there’s very little excuse for me not to keep up to date, is there? ;-)
Is there any chance that we’ll be able to edit the kernel command line at some point?

Michael, I would say it would make its way to their control panel at some point…
Ed, we are working on more options for kernels but, like anything, we hate giving timelines as we prefer to make sure things work rather than work to deadlines. Keep an eye out though :)

I assume this will show up in the API at some point?

I am curious if there is a place where you list what features the kernels support ie: events.

Should i upgrade the kernel version ?
September 24th, 2009 at 12:55 PM PickledOnion
Dan, I will speak with the developers on the API question.
Michael – we don’t have a list of features for each kernel. We use, as much as possible, vanilla kernels so any search should show you the features of each version.
As to whether anyone should upgrade your kernel, that depends on your usage and if a different version offers something that may benefit you.

It’s probable that we’ll add the kernel updates to the API, but I don’t have an ETA for you. Keep an eye on the blog for more updates.

this is a nice feature :)

Awesome, thanks.
I didn’t know about the option to raise a ticket to get this done before and now I guess it’s ‘deprecated’. Anyhow this feature just seriously saved my bacon after a recent update ‘enhanced my distribution beyond repair’.
